Orthodontic expander in an adult - cost?

I just had a consultation with an orthodontist, and she said I will need a pallet expander for about a year, then braces for about a year. They estimated that it will cost $5,000 for the expander ($2500 after insurance) and then additional costs for the braces. Is $5,000 a reasonable amount for the expander, or should I be shopping around for another orthodontist? I'm an adult and will be paying for this myself. Thanks
